VNA Health Care (VNA) leads the field nationally in cervical cancer screening rates. VNA exceeds the Healthy People 2020 cervical cancer screening goals with 94% of their female patients being screened per best practice guidelines.
Dr. Fadel Azer, MD, FACOG, Medical Director at VNA Health Care, recently made a presentation at the Illinois Primary Health Care Association informing attendees about VNA’s cervical cancer screening program. The purpose of this presentation was to share best practices for improving performance relating to cervical cancer screening. The most recent statistics available (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2009 data) show that over 12,000 new cervical cancer cases are discovered each year and that nearly 4,000 women die of cervical cancer per year. The number of cases and the death rate is decreasing, although there continues to be higher incidence among Hispanic and African American women.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services set a national goal of 93% of women obtaining a cervical cancer screening per best practice guidelines as part of its Healthy People 2020 objectives. Guidelines recommend screening every 3 years for all women aged 25-65 years. However, the national screening rate based on the most recent 2010 CDC data, is 73%. The VNA commitment to providing high quality, affordable health care is reflected in this exceptional cervical cancer screening percentage of 94%.
