Gov.-elect Murphy takes NJ Transit tour with stops around the state

JERSEY CITY -

Gov.-elect Phil Murphy spent his Saturday taking a seven-stop NJ Transit tour to speak with constituents around New Jersey about the state of the rails.

The incoming governor traveled from Hoboken to Metuchen through seven North and Central Jersey stations, seeking feedback from commuters on how to fix a system he has called a "national disgrace."

Critics have said Murphy's plan for improvements so far lacks specifics, but he explained during a stop in Jersey City that change starts at the top.

New leadership, he said, must perform an audit, develop a vision and strategy, assess where deficiencies are and speak with consumers. "There's a lot of work to do, and it won't be overnight," Murphy added.

During the campaign, Murphy said Gov. Chris Christie had "wrecked what was once a leading national transit agency."

But come noon Tuesday, complaints about missed trains, crumbling infrastructure and hiked fare prices will officially be Phil Murphy's problems -- after he is sworn in.

The governor-elect's wife and two of their children took a separate NJ Transit ride on Saturday.
