POSTGAME 5: Flying Ghost

POSTGAME 5: Flying Ghost

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED

Shayne Gostisbehere tallied both goals, including the game-winner in overtime to lift the Flyers to their sixth straight victory in a 2-1 decision over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

The game opened with Dallas getting on the board in the first 10 minutes as rookie Gemel Smith scored to give the Stars a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room at first intermission. Gostisbehere added the equalizer on the power play in the second period after he capitalized on a rebound from the point, diving in the air to get the shot off and beat Ben Bishop.

After a scoreless third period, the Flyers and Stars traded chances in the overtime, but eventually Jake Voracek fed the puck to Gostisbehere, who fired a shot at the point that beat Bishop, who stopped 28 shots in the loss.

Goaltender Brian Elliott stopped 27 of 28 shots and has now backstopped the Flyers to all six of the wins during the streak, allowing two goals or less in each of the games.

TURNING POINT
In the run-and-gun overtime hockey, it was Shayne Gostisbehere's blast from the point and Wayne Simmonds screen in front that made the difference in this one. The play unfolded with Voracek making a great play to keep the puck in as the Stars tried to clear the zone along the boards in the 3-on-3 overtime. Voracek hit Gostisbehere charging into the zone who then fired a shot from the top of the left circle and beat Bishop with a shot low on the ice.Video: DAL@PHI: Gostisbehere goes five-hole for OT winner

STATS & STORYLINES

RIC FLAIR ROBE
Travis Sanheim earned it for his first NHL goal on Thursday night. He then awarded it to, who else, Shayne Gostisbehere for his two-goal game.

ABOUT THE STREAK
The Flyers won their sixth consecutive game. It's the first game of the win streak to go beyond regulation. They are just the third team in NHL history to win six or more games in a row immediately following a 10-game winless streak. The others:

San Jose Sharks - winless in 10, then won 6 (2005)
Toronto Maple Leafs - winless in 11, then won 7 (1967) Video: DAL@PHI: Elliott knocks away Benn's chance in OT

STILL LIGHT ON THE KILL
The Flyers also continued a streak in which they allowed the opposition less than two power plays in a game... It's the third straight game they've allowed just one power play and the seventh straight game in which they allowed two or less dating back to Dec. 2... In tonight's game, they didn't take any penalties in the final two periods... In the seven-game span, the Flyers are operating at 91 percent.

JAKE HELPING HAND
Voracek recorded both primary assists on the night giving him 33 assists, which leads the entire NHL... He also now has 14 multi-point games this season, including third in the last six games... Voracek's 40 points now place him in a tie for third in the NHL's scoring race.

WORTH NOTING
Eight Flyers logged over 20 minutes of ice time in this game, led by Ivan Provorov with 24:39... The last time the Flyers won a game 2-1 where both goals were scored by the same player was Nov. 13, 2013 when Brayden Schenn scored twice in a 2-1 win at Pittsburgh... Brian Elliott has been in net for all six wins. It's his eighth career streak of six wins or more; his career high is 11, set last season.

UP NEXT
The Flyers enter week two of their five-game homestand when they take on the Los Angeles Kings on Monday (7pm on NBCSP & 93.3 WMMR)... Like the Stars, the Kings end a four-game Metropolitan road trip on Monday, and are looking for their first win, going 0-2-1 thus far.
